Salamander Squad

The Wooster Salamander Squad is a volunteer citizen science group that helps monitor salamander populations at Wooster Memorial Park (Wayne Co., Ohio). Rick Lehtinen (professor of biology at the College of Wooster) leads the group, with the help of College of Wooster students. We’ve been monitoring permanent plots for salamanders at the park since 2014.

If you are interested in wildlife, being outdoors and making a contribution to scientific knowledge, consider joining us. No qualifications are necessary other than enthusiasm. Any ages are welcome, though children under 12 should be accompanied by an adult.

If you’d like to participate, contact Dr. Lehtinen at rlehtinen@wooster.edu to reserve your spot on our next outing!

Upcoming Dates

  • Salamander Squad will be going on outings in the spring of 2025! Next date: TBA
  • It will last 2 or 2 and a half hours but you are free to leave whenever you need to.

Recommendations

Dress for the weather and bring a study pair of shoes or hiking boots. Don’t forget drinking water and perhaps a small snack. Be prepared to get your hands dirty and potentially walk several miles over the course of the outing.
